Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) are techniques used to inspect materials and equipment without damaging them, being performed in the manufacturing, construction, assembly and maintenance stages.
NDTs are among the main tools for controlling the quality of materials and products and are widely used in the oil/petrochemical, chemical, aerospace, steel, naval, electromechanical and pulp and paper sectors, among others. They contribute to the quality of goods and services, cost reduction, preservation of life and the environment, being a competitive factor for companies that use them.
NDTs include methods capable of providing information regarding the content of defects of a given product, the technological characteristics of a material, or even the monitoring of the degradation in service of components, equipment and structures.
To obtain satisfactory and valid results, the following items must be considered as fundamental elements for the tests:
- Trained, qualified and certified personnel
- Calibrated equipment
- Procedures for performing qualified tests based on previously defined and established standards and acceptance criteria.
In addition to industrial use, the application of NDTs for the conservation of works of art has grown significantly, as well as in agriculture - control of the fat layer of cattle and swine - and their widespread use in medicine.
Comparatively, we can say that the "quality control" that the doctor makes of a human body, in the evaluation of a patient's health or pathology, is the same applied in the industry, only for materials and products.
